Free samples, Belgian style

As I've said before, I'm a sucker for free samples. Sometimes in Philly, I would pop in a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe's just to see what kinds of scrumptious little nibblets they had on offer that day. Cheese squares? Microwaveable meatballs? Free coffee? Oh, I suppose I'll try it, if you insist.

It's the little things that make life here different...

A little wine tasting with your groceries? Don't mind if I do.

  1. I'm confused - do they not sell wine in stores in PA? That is nuts, sorry, we had these in NC, what I don't mind is not having the person say, um, ID please. I take it Colruyt is a haven for samples? Last week the GB was having a beer tasting at 10:30 in the morning.

  2. You had wine samplings in the grocery in NC?? I have never seen that in the states, wherever I've lived.

And, oh my, the liquor laws in Pennsylvania are total insanity. You can ONLY buy alcohol at state-sanctioned liquor and beer shops. Which means no wine (or bourbon or beer) at the grocery store. It was such a pain, and what a crock of total nonsense, besides.

  3. How civilized. And no, I can't imagine a wine tasting at our local Ralph's. (About those samples at TJ's -- for some reason that which tastes so good in the store is rarely appetizing when I get it home.
